Pre-K

The exceptional children's pre-k program at Sardis is designed to provide educational services to children with special needs as well as welcoming typical "peer pals". We have certified teachers who have specialized training in birth through kindergarten.
To plan and guide our classroom, we use Creative Curriculum and Foundations which helps us teach in ways that match the way children develop and learn. The curriculum takes all subject areas of literacy, math, science, social studies, and art and shows us how to teach it in ways that support children's academic progress while respecting the way they grow and develop. It also includes opportunities for your child to develop social skills, self-help skills, and fine and gross motor skills. Our philosophy is that young children learn best by engaging in structured play activities. We share wonderful books which expand into music, art, and play activities. The wonderful thing about having inclusion with typical peer pals is that the students with Individualized Education Plans learn side by side along with their "peer pals". Our goal is to create a safe, loving, and secure learning environment where we can teach effectively and where our students can thrive.
EC students attending pre-k can be three to five years old and attend based upon their IEP. Peer pals have to be four years old on or before August 31 and potty trained, and there is a fee for them to attend so it is based on what the parents decide along with the classroom teacher.
Kindergarten

Kindergarten is a fun and exciting year when children begin to gain the foundations of both reading and writing. Kindergarten teachers follow the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for all areas of the curriculum while incorporating rich learning centers, learning experiences in the classroom and field trips to help support our curriculum.
Students go to specials a week at a time. They receive instruction in art, S.T.E.A.M, music, and physical education. In addition, once a month they go to the media center to explore books and foster a love for reading.
Our focus is on growing our readers and mathematicians. Collaborating with parents, our staff strives to push our students toward achieving at their highest levels. To achieve this goal, we implement the Science of Reading and best practices with phonics instruction. We have tutors who work with small groups of students; this is in addition to our exemplary classroom teachers and instructional assistants.
In Kindergarten, students learn the curriculum with the support of CKLA, exploring lots of interesting topics. We learn about Nursery Rhymes, Five Senses, Kings and Queens, Seasons and Weather. We will explore both fiction and nonfiction books, science, social studies and literacy. We include fun days for students like nursery rhyme day where students dress up as their favorite nursery rhyme they have been studying.

1st Grade

First grade is a great year when the strides the students make are tremendous! The students are eager to become independent readers. They love to read together and on their own!
Students continue to learn letter sounds and patterns to read. They also apply these skills to their writing.
In math, we solve problems using numbers, words, objects, and pictures. We also work to find fun and quick ways to group numbers! Geometry and measurement concepts are included in our curriculum as well.
In science, we learn about force and motion, the earth’s materials, and plants and animals.
In social studies we learn about rules and laws, communities, conflict resolution, cultures, and traditions, just to name a few.
FIRST GRADE IS A BUSY YEAR!!!
2nd Grade

We could just say that second grade is pawsome, or "everything you need to know you learn in second grade", but here's a bit more detail! Second grade is a year of working towards being more independent.
The reading skills which the children have are the asset that allows them to reach the goal of second grade. As second graders become more proficient with word calling, the focus of reading shifts to noticing punctuation, expression, comprehension, and interpretation of text.
Counting money, telling time, solving word problems, and learning addition and subtraction facts are important components of the math program..
3rd Grade
As a third grade team, we strive to enforce the best learning environment for your child. With your support at home, you can help to reinforce the importance of education. Third grade is the year for children to learn a great deal of repsonsibility. We hold them accountable in the classroom for positive citizenship, study habits, and reaching their academic goals.
4th Grade
Get ready for fun, friends, and fabulous learning in fourth grade!
In fourth grade, students will learn reading strategies to help them become critical readers. They will be involved in book clubs to talk about the books that they read. Fourth graders learn to think deeply about their reading.
As writers, students continue working with the writing process approach. Students should know how to spell basic words from kindergarten through third grade and should use basic conventions such as capital letters at the beginning of sentences and punctuation at the end of sentences.
Students will dig deeper into multiplication, division, numbers up to a hundred thousand, area, perimeter, and much more in math! The students should be fluent in basic facts for addition and subtraction, as this is essential for working with multi-digit numbers. Mastering multiplication facts is a part of fourth grade math.
Our units of study in science are rocks and minerals, animal adaptations, magnets and electricity. In social studies, the focus is on the state of North Carolina. Students complete a project to show the three regions of North Carolina.
In fourth grade, students can join the Newspaper Club, Girls on the Run, Good News Club, and/or they can try out for Sardis Rocks. It is also the year when they continue learning to play the recorder!
Fourth grade is a terrific year!
